Tropical Traders mission statement is to deliver the best range of baskets possible. Our intrepid adventurous basket hunters are continually searching for new products to add to our product range. We are situated in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa. We send our baskets daily to all the corners of the globe. Our clients are extremely satisfied and in our eight years of trading we have not lost one customer but gained many new friends. SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT RAFFIA AND THE MANUFACTURING OF OUR PRODUCTS:
Raffia is obtained from the Raffia palm tree or Raphia Farinifera, which has the largest leaves of any palm tree, so it is a logical source for Fibre. The tree is now cultivated specifically for harvest. It is valued by crafters as it is soft, durable and easy to dye. It is invaluable to outdoor projects as it does not shrink with moisture, yet is pliable enough to weave. It is dyed using natural vegetable dyes and then woven into lengths which are then used to manufacture all the different items available. We have approximately 15 families that produce all our different products. They are self employed and do not work out of large factories or warehouses. Every single item is hand made. This is what makes our product so unique and special, you might get a particular colour or design in a shipment and then never get it again. This does make bulk buying a bit of a problem as we cannot guarantee that should you order 400 of a particular shade of blue (for example) that they will all be exactly the same shade, there will be a variance, which is so much nicer than the mass produced products coming from the East or China. We have built up our business from the ordering of 1 container per year to approximately 8-10, so this keeps our suppliers busy most of the year. This has had an enormous beneficial impact on the families concerned and has created a huge upliftment within their communities. We pride ourselves on being a fair trade company.
